"As performing musicians we must find a place in society and a way to earn a living, like the generations of musicians before us. There is no known formula with which to do this, but, just as we rely on our creativity in making music, we can use it to broaden our career horizons, develop and involve our audiences, project our role as musicians, market our product, and incorporate appropriate technology around us. We need not be intimidated by this challenge but should regard it as an integral part of the excitement inherent in choosing to live the life of a performer. In so doing, we form a bond with the great men and women of the past who loved music and who loved being a musician to the fullest measure possible."

Mastering the Art of Performance - Reading Together - Performance and Human Interaction
"Fullness in living for most human beings consists of being fulfilled in more than one area of life. If you identify areas of value other than achieving performance goals, you will have to nurture those areas."
(page 154, Kindle edition)
"By contrast, some teachers are highly aware of the interaction that must take place in the learning process. They believe that the effective instructor must take into account the needs of the students, their desires, and their level of knowledge."
(page 155, Kindle edition)
"Each of us will adopt different guidelines for reaching out with performing activities. The important thing to remember is that your performance needs to be shared with an audience comprised of human beings just like yourself."
(page 158, Kindle edition)
"In doing so you set up a two-way communication between yourself and your audience, a circle with the potential to take on a life of its own, growing and building."
(page 158, Kindle edition)
"Not only is giving fulfilling on a personal level, but it has a way of multiplying and returning to the giver an unexpected and abundance of blessings."
(page 158, Kindle edition)

Mastering the Art of Performance - Reading Together - Evaluation after Performance
The questions on page 131 are really helpful to have your students work through after they've given a performance.
- How did I get through the performance with regard to continuity?
- Did I keep it going reasonably well once it had started, and did I persist through to the end?
- How did the performance score in terms of what I had planned?
- How did I feel during the process?
- How would I assess the effect of the performance if I were an objective observer?
