"Using those blips as retrospective teachable moments instead of emotionally charged incidents can help students make long-term progress as they work to reach their personal potential."

That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week - Reading Together - Healthy Mind, Healthy Body

Playing an instrument is not just a musical activity, it is also a mental and physical activity. As music educators and musicians ourselves, we need to both model good physical and mental health as well as help our students grow in this area.

"One of the most important things parents can do for their son is create and foster a healthy environment. By this I mean both an emotionally supportive structure within which he is free to explore and be in charge of his own destiny and a physically robust routine by which his body and mind can thrive."

That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week - Reading Together - Strategies for Quizzes, Tests, Projects, and Finals

The section I thought the most useful from this chapter was the one on flashcards. I like the idea of using flashcards to help students memorize longer music pieces. You could have them make a photocopy of their music and cut apart sections that are 2 or 3 measures long and glue them to flashcards. And then play one notecard at a time. Or follow the steps below.

"I am not suggesting that students substitute rote memory for actual learning, but I am saying that flash cards are one of the many tricks to help improve material mastery. In my office, I often show students my simple trick for learning a stack of flash cards quickly, accurately, and relatively painlessly: 1. Learn five flash cards. Take a few minutes to really learn them. 2. Then add five more, and review all ten. 3. After all ten are reviewed, add five more, and review all fifteen."

That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week - Reading Together - Scheduling Homework to Manage Time Effectively

"As parents, you can encourage a set homework schedule by creating time (either before or after dinner) when everyone works on tasks free of technological distractions. You could do some bill paying or read a book or newspaper, and your children could work on homework and related assignments."
(page 116, Kindle edition)

"I encourage high school students to do a two-hour block of homework Monday through Thursday, and then schedule two two-hour blocks sometime between Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The caveat is that both weekend two-hour blocks cannot be done on Sunday, because the whole idea of having set homework times is to be proactive rather than reactive, and sitting down on Sunday evening at 8: 00 to start four hours of homework seems like the worst way to get ready for a new school week. Instead, students can do two hours on Saturday from 11: 00 a.m. to 1: 00 p.m. and another two-hour block on Sunday from 3: 00 to 5: 00 p.m. They have the rest of the time to spend time with friends, go to the movies, play video games, or whatever else they may want to do."
