Helping Children Succeed - Reading Together - Parents and Trauma

"But one of the most important findings of this new cohort of researchers is that for most children, the environmental factors that matter most have less to do with the buildings they live in than with the relationships they experience— the way the adults in their lives interact with them, especially in times of stress."
(page 17, Kindle Edition)

"We know that when children experience toxic stress, especially when they are very young, it can disrupt their development in profound ways, compromising their immune system, their executive functions, and their mental health."
(page 19, Kindle Edition)

Helping Children Succeed - Reading Together - Skills and Stress

"Yet it was clear from my reporting that you could make students more self-controlled without ever talking to them about the virtue of self-control."
(page 12, Kindle Edition)

Rather than consider noncognitive capacities as skills to be taught, I came to conclude, it’s more accurate and useful to look at them as products of a child’s environment.

Helping Children Succeed - Reading Together - Adversity and Strategies

"I aim here to follow a different strategy: to consider the developmental journey of children, and particularly children growing up in circumstances of adversity, as a continuum— a single unbroken story from birth through the end of high school."

Helping Children Succeed - Reading Together

Welcome to the newest Reading Together series. I'll be posting a summary about our reading each week on Tuesdays. Come join us!

We'll be reading Helping Children Succeed by Paul Tough. You can get a copy from your local library, or pick up a copy from Amazon.

The chapters are rather shorts, so we'll be reading two chapters per week.
I'll post about the first installment on Tuesday, January 17. That means you have two weeks to get a copy of the book and to read the first two chapters.

The great thing about this program is that it allows us to read works together that can help us in our professional development as well as providing a level of accountability and the added interest of comparing notes as we read together.
