The Art of Practicing - Reading Together - Generosity

"When we take our place onstage shaking with fear and dare to make music, we re-create not only a musical composition but also ourselves." (loc: 2831)

"Facing our fears, doubts, and demons brings out our strength, and appreciating our goodness cultivates tenderness. Together this strength and tenderness become confidence: We have conviction in our heart’s power." (loc: 2952)

The Art of Practicing - Reading Together - The Dancing Body

Playing any instrument - even singing - is a physical activity. As you play your instrument, make sure you are aware of your physical movements and how they affect both you and your instrument.

"Follow-through is what happens when you hit a tennis ball: Your arm keeps moving after the ball leaves the racket. Similarly, when you play a note or phrase on the piano, the hand and arm often want to continue moving in some way after you strike the key(s). Let them keep moving naturally instead of freezing in any one position or limiting your range of movement." (loc: 2582)

The Art of Practicing - Reading Together - Spontaneous Insight

Music in and of itself is a language. That language structure gives us the flow of the music.

"The nature of musical rhythm and offer simple approaches to achieving rhythmic clarity and vitality and a sense of structural coherence." (loc: 2267)

"Even in instrumental music, which does not have words, our familiarity with the language of music gives us a sense of which notes in a phrase require emphasis. As in speech, we create that emphasis by making a louder sound, or by pausing minutely before a sound, or by both of these methods." (loc: 2387)
